Established in 2010 in Astana with the support of the Kazakh government and international academic partners, NU is an autonomous university modeled on global best practice. Since its establishment, NU has been a pioneering institution recognized for its academic excellence and its role as a world-class research university.<\/p>\n

The University and its academic programs have gained or are in the process of securing prestigious accreditations, including AMBA for the MBA, AACSB, European and UK QAA institutional quality assurance, ABET for engineering, as well as accreditations for medicine and public policy.<\/p>\n

According to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025<\/strong>, NU ranks in the top 24\u201329% of the world\u2019s best research universities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At the helm is President, Professor Waqar Ahmad, a distinguished British higher education leader whose previous roles span top UK institutions such as the Universities of Bradford, York, Leeds, and Middlesex, as well as his recent role as president of Abu Dhabi University.<\/p>\n

Forbes sat down with him to explore NU’s mission, graduate success, global partnerships, and opportunities for Georgian students and institutions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Q: You are leading the most ambitious university project in the region. What do you see as the university\u2019s key mission today?<\/strong><\/p>\n

At NU, our mission goes beyond quality education. We aim to prepare globally minded leaders equipped for today\u2019s and tomorrow\u2019s challenges. Our students receive a world-class education, in English, guided by international faculty, and graduate with the academic foundation, personal confidence, and skills to lead and collaborate \u2014 to succeed anywhere.<\/p>\n

Since its founding, NU has aimed to become a leading international university. Today, we are focused on strengthening global partnerships, creating dual-degree programs, and attracting top-tier international students.<\/p>\n

One of NU\u2019s strongest assets is its world-class faculty drawn from over 50 countries, holding degrees from leading research institutions around the globe. This global expertise brings diversity of thought and a standard of research and teaching that matches top international universities.<\/p>\n

We are also investing in strengthening our academic leadership and will be announcing some outstanding senior appointments in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

Q: What do your graduate outcomes look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our graduate success is one of our strongest achievements and matches the global elite institutions. 98% of NU graduates are employed or in further study within one year.<\/p>\n

Many continue their education with us or at world-renowned institutions, including Oxford, Cambridge, Stanford, Columbia, and others \u2014 often on full scholarships.<\/p>\n

NU is increasingly recognized as a launchpad for academic and professional careers worldwide. Our alumni work in leading transnational companies like Google, Apple, BMW, Airbus, and in innovative startups across the globe.<\/p>\n

In 2024, NU leadership visited Georgian schools, universities, and the Ministry of Higher Education to build stronger ties and explore academic and research collaborations. These visits combined strategic meetings with cultural exchange to deepen mutual understanding.<\/p>\n

    Q: What opportunities do your students have in entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary innovation?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Since our founding, we\u2019ve supported over 500 startups from students and faculty. Every undergraduate now takes a course in entrepreneurship \u2014 a life skill, not just a business one.<\/p>\n

    We offer hands-on resources such as our Fab Lab<\/strong>, where students and researchers can prototype tech innovations, including in medical robotics. Through initiatives such as the Astana Business Campus Incubation and Acceleration Programs<\/strong>, our students develop ventures from idea to market.<\/p>\n

    Beyond incubation, NU supports deep-tech commercialization through its Founders School<\/strong>, while programs such as Go Abroad<\/strong> and participation in Stanford\u2019s StartX accelerator<\/strong> offer global exposure.<\/p>\n

      Q: What is your vision for the next decade?<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Our goal is to be counted among the leading research institutions in Central Asia and a competitive global player. We will continue to invest in leadership, talent, infrastructure, and innovation while maintaining our strong focus on student outcomes.<\/p>\n

      Recognizing the importance of research skills, this year we have doubled the number of doctoral scholarships we offer to outstanding students.<\/p>\n

      Our programs are gaining global accreditations, and we aim to move into the top 300 in the global rankings in the next four years \u2014 and even higher in specific subjects.<\/p>\n

      We will build on our role as a catalyst for national development in:<\/p>\n

        We are continually evolving to meet the demands of a digital world. We offer courses in AI, entrepreneurship, and digital skills to all students, regardless of major.<\/p>\n

        New programs in applied AI, cybersecurity<\/strong>, and digital diplomacy<\/strong> are being introduced to prepare students for modern careers. Flexibility and interdisciplinarity \u2014 such as combining data science with business or engineering with AI \u2014 are key to keeping our graduates future-ready.<\/p>\n

        We are also expanding our doctoral offerings, especially for working professionals. Recognizing the importance of professional doctorates for senior professionals, we have launched a Doctorate in Public Policy<\/strong> and are working on introducing:<\/p>\n
