That market optimism will be tested from all sides this week as a slew of corporate earnings, nonfarm payrolls, and a Fed meeting that is expected to signal the start of QE tapering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Here\u2019s what you need to know to start your week.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Earnings Season Rolls On<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Earnings continue to be the main story in stock markets around the world. While many of the biggest names have already reported, with Microsoft (NASDAQ:<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/equities\/microsoft-corp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0MSFT<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" the Q3 US growth slowdown hit these companies and what that means for their respective outlooks. As companies lap pandemic affected quarters, figuring out the new normal for companies that are either recovering or were big 2020 winners will also be on the docket.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nonfarm payrolls<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After October\u2019s disappointing\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/news\/forex-news\/dollar-up-with-fed-plans-for-tapering-unaltered-by-disappointing-us-jobs-report-2639705\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">jobs report<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and the muted\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/gdp-375\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">GDP<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0number, November\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/nonfarm-payrolls-227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">nonfarm payrolls report<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0will test the strength of the US economic recovery. Expectations are for 385K new jobs after the NFP missed expectations in each of the last two months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Whether that lull was temporary due to either the summer delta variant surge or supply chain issues remains to be seen. The report may weigh on the speed of Fed tapering. It might also give added impetus to Democrats in Congress on their budget package negotiations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fed Meeting<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/fomc-statement-398\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fed Open Market Committee<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(FOMC) report comes out at 2 pm on Wednesday after a two-day meeting. Fed chair Jerome Powell has said in recent weeks that the plan to start tapering in November is still on, so the question is whether that will bear out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Bank of Canada\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/news\/economy\/bank-of-canada-signals-it-could-hike-rates-sooner-than-expected-2657418\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">announcement<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0last week that they would stop quantitative easing caught some by surprise. It remains in the question how quickly central banks will move away from pandemic-era extraordinary measures and how the economy and the markets will react.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Also to watch in Powell\u2019s comments and the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/fomc-press-conference-1692\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">press conference<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0that follows is his current view on inflation, after the debates over whether it is transitory or persistent, and what that means for the pace of interest rate hikes in the months (years?) to come. Of note, the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/indices\/usdollar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">US Dollar<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0popped on Friday after trading lower much of the month and will be in focus if there are any surprises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On Thursday, the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/boe-interest-rate-decision-170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bank of England<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0releases its November monetary policy decision. Many in the markets expect a 15 basis points hike. How markets handle the return of monetary tightening remains to be seen, no matter how much it is \u2018priced in\u2019 already via expectations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Manufacturing PMI reports<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The supply chain snarls and various growth slowdowns will be in the spotlight as we enter the holiday season to finish the year. Several PMI reports come out this week. China already\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/manufacturing-pmi-594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">kicked off<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0with a disappointing 49.2, marking\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/news\/economic-indicators\/china-factory-activity-contracts-for-second-month--official-pmi-2661695\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reduced activity<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/ism-manufacturing-pmi-173\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">US<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/manufacturing-pmi-204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">U.K<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/german-manufacturing-pmi-136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Germany<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and other Euro Zone countries will all report. Expectations are for expansion across the board &#8211; numbers above 50 on the index &#8211; and will give an additional indicator on how the global economy sets up to finish the year and perhaps how long consumers will have to purchase their holiday presents in advance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Crypto: Another Bitcoin ETF, And Monetary Tightening<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Two weeks ago, it was\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/crypto\/bitcoin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bitcoin<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and last week it was\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/crypto\/ethereum\/eth-usd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ETH\/USD<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0as a leading cryptocurrency to set a new all-time high. Meanwhile, smaller and less grounded coins such as\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/crypto\/shiba-inu\/shib-usd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Shiba Inu<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0continue to grab headlines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There are two headline stories to watch for the crypto impact this week. First, a third bitcoin ETF is expected to start trading. The VanEck Bitcoin Strategy ETF (NYSE:<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/etfs\/xbtf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0XBTF<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">) is expected to list by Wednesday. Excitement over the first ETF, ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (NYSE:<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/etfs\/proshares-bitcoin-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0BITO<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">), may have propelled bitcoin to all-time highs, but the response to the second, Valkyrie Bitcoin Strategy ETF (NASDAQ:<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/etfs\/valkyrie-bitcoin-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0BTF<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">), was more muted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s also worth watching how the crypto complex reacts to a tightening environment. Much of the investment thesis for crypto is tied to inflation and the value of money; an increase in the cost of capital via central bank tightening could make traditional currencies and assets relatively more attractive.
